What is alternative software?

Over the years, particular software programs may have become more widely used than others because they're easy to use — or through better marketing efforts, wider distribution, or familiarity. This can occur where, for example, computers are sold with a particular brand of software already installed.

In any case, any other software programs of the same type are looked upon as an "alternative" to the most-used software.

Why use alternative software?

Of the many products available, some alternative software may have desirable features and benefits that the current "number one" programs do not have. These can include:

  • Price. The price may be lower, or even free.
  • Lighter computer hardware requirements.
  • Concerns of lack of privacy and security in other software or software from particular manufacturers.
  • In the case of Open Source alternative software: ability to change how the program looks, feels, acts, etc.

"Open Source" software means that the source code for the software is openly available. It does not necessarily mean that the software is free.

What types of alternative software are available?

Office suites that include a word processor (including those compatible with number one versions), accounting software, groupware (shared information, like contacts, appointments, etc.), graphic design, computer aided design, databases and, of course, games.

Los Angeles Computerhelp can assist with the selection and installation of the alternative software that suits your needs.
