The traditional approach to surveillance security systems utilized Closed Circuit Television cameras with VCR tapes used for video storage. The video was blurry and it was often difficult to actually recognize a person by just looking at the video; usually it required sending the video to a special lab for enhancement to see the faces or license plates. The tapes used in this system were not the best recording medium and were also the first target of burglars (no video, no evidence). They also required replacement every week or so, had to be rewound, and stored in an environmentally controlled room to prevent them from sticking.
As surveillance technology evolved, CCTV units got replaced with DVR (Digital Video Recorder) systems. The DVR works by converting the signal from analog cameras (cameras that are connected to the recording unit through coaxial cables) to a digital format and instead of tapes it uses a physical hard drive to store the information. Depending on the size of the hard drive and quality of the video, surveillances can be stored for a very long time (the higher the video quality the shorter the time of storage). Further, hard drives have the advantage of being affordable (especially in this day and age) and come without many of the worries and hassles of tapes. While this technical evolution provided much improvement, there yet remained the problem of burglars stealing the DVR units. Unfortunately, most companies that use surveillance systems don’t have special caged areas for these devices and their theft has been a major problem.
So, after facing all these problems, major manufacturers came out with a new line of surveillance security system that makes it possible to capture all video recordings through network-based video cameras installed on the premises which stream surveillance incidents through an existing Internet connection from the business or home to a remote location (or even multiple locations) for storage. This is called an IP (Internet Protocol) based surveillance security system. This effectively eliminates the problem of recording device theft by burglars. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the quality of your cameras, you can have crystal sharp videos that can be easily burned onto DVDs from a remote location and turned over to authorities without the necessity of being on the premises of the burglary incident.
